Their Love Languages: Analyzing Owen, Locke, and Erick
Prepare to swoon!
Most everyone, I think, is familiar with the five typical love languages that people ascribe to while building and nurturing relationships. For those unfamiliar, the five types are
- Physical Touch
- Quality Time
- Gift-giving
- Acts of Service
- Words of Affirmation
As with any psychological study relating to personality types (MBTI, Enneagram, etc.), I am drawn to analyzing how people tend to express their love (platonic, familial, and romantic), even when building character profiles for my stories.
So, without further ado, enjoy the love language traits of my current MMCs: Owen, Locke, and Erick!
(Potential spoilers for The Book of Water, The Book of Dreams, and The Book of Light ahead.)
Owen
Love Language: Quality Time
His Statement: I love spending time with you.
Quality Time is my own love language, as several online tests have told me, and it makes sense that I would sprinkle that same trait in with Owen. Since he and Celine share a common love of reading, quality time in the castle library made sense not once but twice (and readers have mentioned how much they loved both scenes).
From the Text:
- “Perhaps we should protect one another,” he said. “Never let the other out of our sight.”
- Chapter 16 (swoon!)
- He didn’t release her hand right away. “Let’s change and meet in my chambers for breakfast.”
- Chapters 19 and 20
- “You will return to me,” he said. “Or I will bury myself in the Sea of Kings to find you.”
Locke
Love Language: Acts of Service
His Statement: Tell me what you need.
Acts of Service made sense for Locke, whose introduction to Rory is to help her with a monumental task. Even while they were strangers, he stepped forward to help. And on the flip side of that, with Rory as a healer, every effort she takes to make sure he’s recovering from any injury means that much more to him–it’s her act of service for him.
From the Text:
- From among the crowd, the handsome traveler emerged, his dark eyes studying her before nodding once. “I’ll take you.”
- Chapter 7
- Chapter 13 (SWOON)
- “You don’t need a protector, Rory.” He reached as though to touch her face but hesitated, resolved to hold her hand instead, leaving her cheek to bear the sensation of a touch that didn’t come. “You’re capable and smart and strong. But I…” His lips pressed together as he exhaled. “I hate that it happened. I hate that I didn’t stop it.”
- And, honestly, the whole book ๐
Erick
Love Language: Physical Touch
His Statement: Can I give you a hug?
The very instant he met Neeve, from her magnificent hair to the light from her eyes…Let’s just say Erick’s off-the-charts charisma came in handy while flirting with our heroine!
From the Text:
(Like Locke, I would say “it’s the whole book,” lol, but here are some specific examples)
- “Wait.” He opened his hand to her, his palm inviting. “Tell me.” . . . She slipped her fingers over his palm, surprised by its warmth, by the tender way he wrapped his fingers around hers.
- “Breathe,” he said, smoothing her hair from her face. “I’ve got you. Breathe.”
- Her breath caught as Mal’Erick touched her face, his palm forming to her cheek.
- “Why are you smiling?” — “I’m holding your hands.”
- Chapter 27 (this chapter SENT ME)
- One snippet in particular: “I’ll never let go.” (SWOOOOOOOOON)
- Chapter 29 (๐)
